Phototherapy
(LED & Daylight PDT)
Specialist surgical procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions, performed with a precise and evidence-based approach.
What is Phototherapy?
Phototherapy involves controlled exposure of the skin to specific light sources to target underlying disease processes.
Depending on the modality, treatment can:
- Reduce inflammation
- Target acne-causing bacteria
- Treat sun-damaged and precancerous skin
- Support skin healing and barrier function
At Cygnet Dermatology:
- LED Light Therapy
A non-invasive treatment using targeted light wavelengths to manage inflammatory skin conditions. - Daylight Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
A treatment that uses a topical photosensitising agent activated by natural daylight to treat sun-damaged and precancerous skin.
Please note:
- UVB phototherapy is not currently offered
Conditions Treated
Phototherapy may be recommended for:
- Acne and acne-prone skin
- Actinic keratoses (sun-damaged, precancerous lesions)
- Field cancerisation (areas of widespread sun damage)
- Rosacea and inflammatory skin conditions
- Selected superficial skin lesions (as clinically appropriate)
Clinical Approach
All phototherapy treatments at Cygnet Dermatology are guided by:
- Evidence-based treatment selection
- Appropriate modality (LED vs Daylight PDT)
- Consideration of skin type and condition severity
- Monitoring of response and tolerance
- Integration into a broader dermatological management plan
What to Expect
Your dermatologist will determine the most appropriate approach based on your condition.
LED Light Therapy
- Performed in-clinic
- Non-invasive with no downtime
- Typically requires a series of sessions
- Mild warmth or tingling may be experienced
Daylight PDT
- Application of a topical photosensitising cream
- Short preparation period
- Controlled daylight exposure
- Minimal discomfort compared to conventional PDT
- Post-treatment redness and mild skin peeling may occur
Who This Is For
Phototherapy may be suitable for:
Patients with sun-damaged or precancerous skin
Individuals with inflammatory skin conditions
Patients seeking non-systemic treatment options
Those requiring field treatment for widespread lesions
GP-referred patients for targeted dermatological care
Treatment Considerations
- Multiple sessions may be required
- Strict sun protection is essential
- Daylight PDT is weather and season dependent
- Not all patients or conditions are suitable for phototherapy
A personalised treatment plan will be discussed during consultation.
